Many of these designs feature images from The Victor and Commando! These two titles are possibly Britain's most popular boys' adventure comics, both published by DC Thomson from Dundee.
Commando! first appeared in 1961 and is still being printed. The Commando website (/www.commandocomics.com) describes the comic as Britain’s longest serving war comic. "These stories, with their mixture of excitement, danger and courage under fire, and the dynamic artwork that accompanies them, have won Commando a loyal readership over the decades," it says.
It is famous for its small 7 × 5½ inch, 68 page format. Each edition tells a character-based military tale, with only the covers in colour. The inside pages are beautifully drawn but are in black and white. At its peak, in the 1970s, the title sold some 750,000 copies a month.
"On land, at sea, and in the air, Commando’s stories cover every corner of the globe and are set throughout world history, the epic tales of bravery in battle making Commando Comics the Home of Heroes!"
The Victor ran from 1961 to 1992 and regularly sold more than 500,000 copies a week. It ran a story of valour on its cover. Inside, Alf Tupper was the flagship character and other favourites were Braddock Of The Bombers; jungle strongman Morgan The Mighty; Gorgeous Gus, the aristo soccer player; and Joe Bones, The Human Fly who would use his climbing skills on daring military missions (the higher up the mountain he climbed, so his spirits soared). Each year an annual was also published: The Victor Book for Boys.
