I've just been struck by the plain beauty of the inked sheet, before it had an image printed upon it. Here are four sheets of my mould-made cotton paper, with a layer of plain red ink. 

The red ink lying upon the sheet - and that's it. 

I suppose it's the beauty of the tabula rasa, the black sheet, the potential of the plain paper – plus that gorgeous red colour, of course. 

I have struggled to appreciate the conceptual art of blank canvas in the past ... but perhaps this goes some way to explain what the appeal of apparently plain work.
