Hurricane!

£ 40.00£ 195.00

Hurricane! This warhorse was the RAF's main fighter aircraft during the Battle of Britain – there were many more Hurricanes than Spitfires in service.

Because the Hurricane was slower than the Spitfire, the squadrons flying the slower aircraft were generally told to intercept German fighters, leaving Hurricanes to concentrate on the bombers. The Hurricane was slower than the Spitfire I and II and the Messerschmitt Bf 109E, and its thick wings compromised acceleration, but it could out-turn both of them. The Hurricane scored more RAF victories than the Spitfire during this period, accounting for 55 percent of the 2,739 German losses, according to Fighter Command, compared with 42 per cent by Spitfires.

It was first built in 1937 and production continued until 1944. There were more than 14,000 built.

This is a panel from Commando! comics. These have been produced by Britain's top comic publisher DC Thomson for more than 50 years – and they are still in print.
