Spitfire circles German bomber
£ 40.00–£ 280.00
Spitfire circles German bomber. The British fighter aircraft is pictured above a German Heinkel bomber in an image taken from the front of a Commando comic.
The Spitfire is a design classic and a symbol of British indomitability. The icon of British military history is so beautiful and yet so deadly.
Commando! comics have been produced by Britain’s top comic publisher DC Thomson for more than 50 years – and they are still in print.
I am the the first and only screenprinter to have permission from DC Thomson to use their archive of images for my work.
More Spitfires were produced than any other British Second World War aircraft – although the Hurricane was more numerous in the Battle OF Britain. Various versions were produced, but the Spitfire was the only British fighter to be in continuous production throughout the war.
It was designed by RJ Mitchell and first flew in 1936. More than 20,000 were produced in total until 1948 and was till in service (for the Irish Air Service) in 1961. As of 2015, there were apparently about 50 Spitfires still airworthy.
